Our merry little band from Island Dog Sports braved the whims of a Victoria-area winter storm and headed out for Shannick Farm for our very first Agility Fun Trial. Well, it was the first for me, Pia, Ann and Brianna. For Peni, it was the first time for her Betty and Switch; for Cindy and Joe, this was old-hat -- they were our veterans!
There was a skiff of snow on the ground at the farm, and it was cool and raining during the morning. Around about noon, the raindrops turned to snowflakes and things got a little more serious. The trial was cut short, with everyone heading out around 3 p.m. As is usual for the Victoria area, once you go a kilometre or so, the weather is completely different. As soon as I hit my neighbourhood, it was all green, not white. I felt a little silly scraping off the several inches of snow that were still adhering to my vehicle, before I put the car in the garage. Everything else was green, green, green. That changed about half an hour later when some of the fluffy stuff put in an appearance. But it's stopped now, and the forecast calls for a Pineapple Express to move in overnight, warm everything up and melt the white stuff away. Ah, life on Vancouver Island!
At the trial, everyone ran pretty well...and we all had lots of fun. We were justifiably proud of our little cohort of pups...we thought, in our own humble opinions, that our dogs did just fine for their first time out. Even though we don't do heavy-duty practice for agility trials, we appear to have laid down the fundamentals well with our dogs and I think we'd do just fine at a regular trial. Now all we have to do is figure out how to work agility trials into our summer dragon boat schedule!
